There are a lot of tricks to successfully tie dying your own t-shirts, but the most important thing is you must have the best white t-shirt. Not just any t-shirt will hold up. It needs to have the proper amount of thickness and hold up under multiple dyes, hard twisting and many washes. I can tell you from lots of trial and error that the Gildan 5000 heavy cotton t-shirt works the best.

You can find the Gildan 5000 in many places. At t-shirt.ca, however, if you purchase in quantities over 72, you can get them for well under $2 each, before shipping and taxes. I’ve looked around and have not found a better price online.

What is even better is if you order more then $500, then your order ships for free! If you’re like us and live out in the boonies, then shipping can be quite expensive. We always try to coordinate our orders to meet the $500 threshold and we’ve saved tons of money as a result!
